Indigenous Peoples' Day started as an alternative in 1991, per Fast Company. It honors Native American history and contributions. President Joe Biden became the first president to proclaim it in 2021. But it is not a federal holiday.

More than a dozen states now use the Indigenous Peoples' Day name, per Barron's. Montana became the latest in October 2025..
