Tottenham finally won a league game. They beat Coventry City 3-1 at home on Monday night. It was their first Premier League win of the season.
The wait had become embarrassing. Spurs were the only team in England's top six divisions without a league win this season. They started the night at the bottom of the table.
Now they sit 16th with six points from seven games.
What happened
James Maddison was the story of the night. He started his first game since May 2025. Within 14 minutes he had Tottenham ahead. He took a pass from Mohammed Kudus and curled the ball into the top corner from outside the penalty area.
The home fans went wild.
This was a huge moment for Maddison. He had featured only rarely since May 2025. He suffered the first of two serious knee injuries then. He ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in August 2025. That was just three months after injuring the same knee.
He is 29 years old and has barely played in 17 months.
Tottenham had chances to extend the lead. Dominic Solanke had a goal ruled out for offside in the 18th minute. Maddison nearly made it 2-0 after half an hour.
His half-cross, half-shot curled just wide.
Coventry made them pay for the missed chances. Four minutes after the break, Jack Rudoni scored for the visitors. Spurs lost the ball in Coventry's half.
Rudoni's cross hit a teammate, but the ball fell kindly for him. He drove it home to make it 1-1.
The nerves returned to the stadium. Then Omar Marmoush stepped up. In the 58th minute he held off Milan van Ewijk.
He lashed home his first goal for Tottenham. Andrew Robertson provided the assist. It was a stunning strike from outside the box.
There was one more feel-good moment. Dejan Kulusevski came off the bench late on. He had been out since May 2025 with a knee injury.
Sky Sports reports he had gone 526 days without playing. The fans gave him a huge ovation.
Ben Davies sealed the win in added time. He had been on the pitch for about 21 minutes. He took a pass from Solanke and poked the ball home from the edge of the penalty area.
It finished 3-1.

Why it matters
This win was about more than three points. It ended a miserable run. Tottenham had gone six league games without a win to start the season.
They were bottom of the table despite big summer spending.
The numbers show how bad it had been. According to beIN Sports, this was only Spurs' sixth win in their last 37 home Premier League games. They had drawn ten and lost 21 of the others.
It was also only their fourth league win in all of 2026.
The manager had felt the pressure. Roberto De Zerbi took his squad to Marbella in Spain for warm-weather training. He wanted to kickstart the season.
He also put Maddison back in the team. The gamble worked.
Maddison's return is the biggest positive. Tottenham missed his creativity for 18 months. He told Sky Sports after the game that he wanted to show what the team had missed.
"I just wanted to play well," he said. "I just wanted to show my qualities and show what I bring to the team. " He believes he can help push Spurs up the table.
Kulusevski's comeback matters too. He missed the whole of last season. His return gives De Zerbi another attacking option.
Having both Maddison and Kulusevski fit again changes how Tottenham can play.
The three goals also made history. All three Tottenham goals came from outside the penalty area. beIN Sports reports they were the first team to do this in a Premier League game since Fulham against Leicester City in May 2023. Tottenham last did it in September 2022, also against Leicester.
Marmoush reached a personal milestone as well. It was his first goal for Tottenham. All 11 of his Premier League goals have come in home games.
Ten were for Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. One is now for Spurs. No player has scored more Premier League goals without any coming away from home.
Coventry deserve credit too. Frank Lampard's side were newly promoted. They had won their previous two games.
Eight of their starting players had played in the Championship last season, Lampard noted. He said the scoreline did not reflect how close the game was. Lampard also said he expected VAR to check Marmoush's goal before it stood.
Maddison later apologized to the Coventry fans for his celebration. He had started his career in Coventry's youth system. He told the BBC he adores the club and meant no disrespect.
The win moves Tottenham to 16th place. They have six points from seven games. They are level on points with Coventry, who sit below them on goal difference.
Manchester City lead the table with seven wins from seven. Spurs remain 15 points behind the leaders.
What happens next
Marmoush believes this is only the start. "Just the beginning," he told BBC Sport after the game. "We are so, so happy.
We have had good performances in that last week but haven't had the end result of a win. We're very happy to win our first game today, and I'm also happy to score my first goal for Tottenham. We will build on this.
".
He praised the manager as well. "I feel amazing," he said of De Zerbi. "He helps us all and teaches us small details.
He also helps us on a personal basis. I love the intensity and passion that he brings. We believe in the system that we play.
On the pitch, we are like a big family, and we will fight for each other until the end. ".
The fixtures get harder now. Spurs travel to rivals Chelsea on Saturday, October 24. Kickoff is at 5:30 pm UK time. A week later they host Crystal Palace.
One win does not fix a bad start. But it changes the mood. For one night, the fans could enjoy their team winning again.
English football keeps producing shocks, like Wolves' 1-3 home defeat by Bolton at Molineux, so nothing is decided yet.
The real test is consistency. Tottenham play like a team that deserves more points. Marmoush said the players believe the performances have been good.
If they keep playing well and get Maddison and Kulusevski fit, the climb up the table can begin. Wrexham's late comeback showed how one result can shift a season's mood. Spurs will hope Monday was their turning point.
