Alexander Zverev is the year-end world No. 1 in men's tennis. The ATP confirmed it on Monday, October 12, 2026. He is the first German man to finish a season on top.

What happened

The news came after a loss by Carlos Alcaraz. Zizou Bergs stunned Alcaraz in Shanghai. Bergs won 7-5, 7-6(4) in Shanghai.

That result closed the last path for Alcaraz to catch Zverev.

Ben Shelton had already lost to Arthur Gea on Sunday. With both rivals out, Zverev could no longer be caught. Zverev did not need to win a match that day.

He watched the race end from Shanghai.

He faces Alexander Bublik in Shanghai on Tuesday. Zverev is still No. 2 in the live rankings.

He will pass Jannik Sinner before the season ends. The earliest date is November 2, according to the ATP. He is sure of the top spot by November 23. That date is the final ranking day of the season.

This year is the best of Zverev's career. He started 2026 with zero Grand Slam titles. A Grand Slam is one of the four biggest tennis events.

He won the French Open in Paris. He beat Flavio Cobolli in five sets in the final. No German man had won there in the modern era.

He then reached the Wimbledon final. Sinner beat him there. Zverev then won the US Open in New York.

He needed five sets in his first two matches. He dropped just one set after that. Only four men have done this in the modern era.

They won a second major in the same year as their first. The others were Jimmy Connors, Guillermo Vilas, and Sinner.

He won 25 of 27 matches at the four Grand Slams. He also reached the Australian Open semi-finals. Alcaraz beat him there.

The match lasted five hours and 27 minutes.

He reached at least the semi-finals at four early Masters events. The events were Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, and Madrid. He lost to Sinner each time, according to the ATP.

In Madrid, he reached the final.

Why it matters

The No. 1 rank is the top prize in tennis. It marks the best player across a full season.

Zverev is 29 years old. He will be the oldest first-time year-end No. 1. He will be 29 years and 217 days old on November 23. That is three days older than Andre Agassi was in 1999. It is 20 days older than Andy Murray was in 2016.

Zverev was born in Hamburg. He has finished in the top 10 at year-end eight times before. On five of those runs, he was in the top five.

He is the fourth active player to earn the year-end No. 1 honor. The others are Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner.

Zverev is also the 20th player to earn the honor.

He will later become the 30th player to reach world No. 1. In 2024, he finished the year at No. 2. Two years later, he reached the top.

His path opened when Sinner got hurt. Sinner has not played since the Wimbledon final on July 12. He will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. That stopped Sinner from adding more points.

Zverev still earned his spot with two major wins.

Two former partners have accused him of physical abuse, according to news reports. That history has followed his rise to the top.

What happens next

Zverev still has tennis to play this year. He is in the round of 16 in Shanghai. He is chasing his eighth Masters 1000 title there.

A Masters 1000 is a top event below the Grand Slams.

Then comes the ATP Finals in Turin. The ATP Finals is the season-ending event for the top eight men. Zverev has won that event twice, in 2018 and 2021. He can become the eighth player with at least three titles there.

Sinner will miss the ATP Finals too.

The final rankings come out on November 23. That day will make the No. 1 finish formal. For more from Shanghai, read our reports on Jakub Mensik and Alex de Minaur.

Zverev waited years for this moment. Before this year, he had lost three major finals. He hurt his ankle badly in 2022. It happened in a French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal.

Now he ends 2026 on top of tennis. The next test is to stay there in 2027. He called the feat "a dream come true. "
