James Madison University will leave the Sun Belt Conference and join the American Conference. The school accepted the invitation on Oct 12, 2026. The move takes effect no later than July 1, 2028, said JMU athletics.

What happened

A conference is a group of schools that play each other in sports. "Realignment" means schools switching from one conference to another. JMU's Board of Visitors voted unanimously to accept the invitation, said JMU athletics.

The announcement came on Oct 12, 2026, in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The Dukes will become full members of the American no later than July 1, 2028. "The American Conference is the right home for James Madison University."

Board rector Dave Rexrode said it in the school's release. "We are honored that our request for membership in the American Conference has been accepted.

"

Those were the words of JMU president James Schmidt. "We are bullish about our future path as conference members," said athletics director Matt Roan.

Commissioner Tim Pernetti called the American "a destination" for schools like JMU. The school applied in writing, and the league ran a full review first. The league studied JMU's academics, finances and fan base before the vote, said the school.

Seventeen of JMU's 18 sports will compete in the American, said the AP. Women's field hockey will stay in the Mid-American Conference. JMU already knows the league.

Its lacrosse team has played in the American since 2022. Swimming and diving joined the league for 2025-26, said JMU athletics. JMU has won the last two American lacrosse titles as an affiliate member.

The league was previously called the American Athletic Conference. JMU joined the Sun Belt in 2022 from the Colonial Athletic Association. The school moved up from the FCS to the FBS level in 2022. The AP noted it became a full FBS member after two years.

Since joining the Sun Belt, JMU has won titles in football, basketball, volleyball and soccer. The school said so in its announcement.

Why it matters

College football has rich "power" conferences and smaller leagues. The smaller leagues are called the Group of 6. Group of 6 schools get less TV money and fewer playoff spots. JMU is a rising star in that group.

The Dukes made the College Football Playoff in 2025, per the AP. They lost 51-34 to Oregon in the first round. Last season they won the Sun Belt title and earned a playoff berth.

JMU is 6-0 this season under coach Billy Napier, the former Florida coach. The program is 46-11 at the FBS level, The Spun reported. Only Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon and Notre Dame have better winning rates in that span.

The American offers a bigger stage than the Sun Belt. The move should bring bigger TV exposure and a clearer path to the playoff. The league's members include Memphis, Tulane, South Florida, East Carolina and Army, said JMU athletics.

The Spun reported, citing ESPN, that JMU's entry fee is about $23 million. The exit fee is $5 million, per the same report. The timing may be linked to fees.

ESPN reported the Sun Belt planned to vote on raising exit fees later that week. Front Office Sports said the vote may have sped up JMU's decision.

Texas State paid the same $5 million fee when it left the league. The school joined the Pac-12 earlier this year, The Spun reported. That history shows realignment never stops in college sports.

Bigger leagues mean bigger TV checks. They also mean tougher games every week. JMU believes it is ready for that step.

NFL teams feel the TV effect every week.

Examples are the Bills-Rams game and the 49ers' 32-29 win. JMU wants the same lift from a bigger league.

What happens next

JMU must join the American no later than July 1, 2028. It could happen as soon as next season, The Spun reported. An early move could raise the exit fee, per the same report.

The Sun Belt responded with a joint statement on Oct 12. Commissioner Keith Gill said the league had its best four-year run ever. He called the Sun Belt "the premier FBS non-autonomy conference in the country."

"The Sun Belt Conference is RISING, and our best days are ahead," he added.

League leaders will "examine and evaluate all opportunities" for the future. Sun Belt board president Dr. Kyle Marrero backed the league's approach in the statement.

The Sun Belt still has 14 football-playing members, per the AP. With JMU, the American will have 14 full members in football. For now, JMU finishes its Sun Belt business on the field.

JMU fans will watch the 2027 season closely.

Rive News also follows the Oman vs Nepal League 2 match.

JMU will now chase bigger goals. The American gives the Dukes better TV slots and a stronger playoff case. Fans can expect new rivalries with schools like Memphis and Tulane.

The Sun Belt must now plan life without one of its best teams. The next two years will shape both leagues.
