Apple plans two October launches: smart home hub, OLED MacBook Pro

On Thursday morning, Apple's marketing chief Greg Joswiak posted two words and a date on X: "Welcome home. October 13." The post confirmed what Bloomberg's Mark Gurman had been reporting for months, Apple's long-delayed push into the smart home is finally happening.

This is Apple running two separate October launch rounds instead of one. The first, on October 13, is all about the home: a brand-new smart home hub, a refreshed Apple TV 4K, and a new HomePod mini.

The second, expected around October 27, brings new Macs, including the first touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro. Both rounds will feature online video presentations plus hands-on sessions for media, according to Bloomberg.

What's coming October 13

The centerpiece is the smart home hub, an all-new device described as a cross between an iPad and a HomePod. Reports say it carries a roughly 6-inch square display and works as a multi-person device for controlling smart home products, FaceTime calls, video, news, weather, and calendar events.

Siri AI is the main method of interaction, and the hub is widely seen as the reason the device waited years: Apple reportedly held it back until its next-generation Siri could function as a genuinely useful conversational assistant. Pricing is rumored around $350. Versions include a wall-mountable model and one with a half-dome speaker base reminiscent of the iMac G4, with a camera and presence sensor that detects who is in the room.

"Apple is about to debut its revamped push into the smart home, built around Siri AI," Gurman wrote on X in July, previewing the strategy now confirmed for October.

The HomePod mini gets new colors, an N1 networking chip for improved Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a faster S-series processor supporting Siri AI. The Apple TV 4K moves to an A19 or A19 Pro chip with more RAM, the same N1 chip, and an upgraded Siri Remote.

What's coming October 27

The second round is the Mac event. Bloomberg reports Apple will introduce 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with OLED displays and touchscreen capabilities, a first for the Mac, plus a Dynamic Island. The machines are expected to be thinner and lighter than current models, powered by the M6 chip.

An M6 iMac and an OLED iPad mini round out the lineup. The iPad mini gets a landscape camera for video calls, a redesigned speaker system, and its first OLED display in the smaller tablet size.

Why this matters

The hub has been in development for nearly three years, according to reports, and its software was only recently declared ready. The delay was the Siri question: a smart home display with a limited voice assistant would have landed flat. With Siri AI now shipping in iOS 27, Apple is betting the assistant is finally good enough to carry a product.

For the Mac, the touchscreen OLED Pro ends years of speculation and marks the biggest display change to the notebook line in a decade. Watch the October 13 video presentation first, then the 27th for pricing and ship dates on the Macs.
